Anna Hepler

Anna Hepler works in ceramics, crocheted wire, soft sculpture, collage, etching, and virtually any other medium pulled into her creative orbit. Hepler has worked with air to create non-static sculptures, restless with cycles of inflation and deflation; and has built large sculptural forms from steel wire that collapse perceptually in space, existing as a ghostly drawing despite their aggressive size. These works grow from an impulsive place, beyond reach of clear language or reason, emerging from and describing a world of gestures and feelings that she cannot describe. For years, she has explored a family of “elemental” forms and motifs, flattening, stretching, and reconfiguring them in the pursuit of some basic core truth. A fan of improvisation and experimentation, Hepler strives to suspend her practice in uncertainty.
